SYNOPSIS
Mario Botta. The Space Beyond (Mario Botta. Oltre lo Spazio) is a rare, in-depth artistic journey into the work of internationally acclaimed Swiss Architect Mario Botta.
The film explores Botta’s ever growing curiosity and reflections on the contradictions of society, through his sacred spaces, a subject very dear to him. Why does a globalized society feel the urge to build such spaces?
The directors travel to China, South Korea, Israel, Italy and Switzerland to discover a passionate and tireless Artist, his buidings and part of his creative process.
Botta is one of the few Architects, who has built places of prayer for the three main monotheistic religions. After building many churches, chapels and a synagogue, he is now projecting a mosque in China.
Through his thoughts and his interactions with artists, colleagues, clients and family members, the viewers have
a glimpse of the man behind the Architect.

Cast & Crew
Get to know our cast and crew
Mario Botta
Born in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in 1943. After an apprenticeship, he attended the Art College in Milan and then studied at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice. Directed by Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol he received his professional degree in 1969. In Venice he met and worked for Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn.
Since then he has carried out an intense teaching activity in many schools of architecture of Europe, Asia, the United States and Latin America. Among his acclaimed works, the SFMOMA museum in San Francisco, the cathedral of the Resurrection in Evry, the museum Jean Tinguely in Basel, the Kyobo tower and the Leeum museum in Seoul, the Tsinghua University library and Art Museum in Beijing and many more.
He was awarded the honorary degree in different universities of Argentina, Greece, Rumania, Bulgaria, Brazil and Switzerland. In 1996 he was among the founders of the Academy of architecture in Mendrisio where he still teaches. His theatre of architecture in Mendrisio started its activity in October 2018

Loretta Dalpozzo, Writer, Director, Producer
Loretta Dalpozzo is a Swiss journalist, director and producer, active abroad for over 20 years. First in the United Kingdom and now in Asia, she has mainly worked as a freelance correspondent for Swiss National TV, for which she has made hundreds of reportages of different lengths for different programs. Among the most recent documentaries the 52 minutes “Cambodia in the blood” (RSI 2017) and the independent short film “Family in Pieces” about the struggle of the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar, who won the 2018 Journalistic Award Carla Agustoni, in the context of the Human Rights Film Festival, Lugano.
Michèle Volontè, Writer, Director
Michèle Volontè is a Swiss-Canadian journalist and producer. She has more than a decade-long experience in broadcasting at Swiss National TV, where she worked also as an anchorwoman. She is now working for the Culture and Lifestyle department. She has produced TV and multimedia formats, she moderates debates and public events.
